On Tuesday, 23 December 2025, His Worship the Mayor of Alfred Duma Local Municipality, Cllr Z.J Sibisi, together with Members of the Municipal Council, successfully handed over a new fleet of municipal service vehicles at the Kandahar Sport Ground in Ward 20.
The handover marks a significant milestone in strengthening the Municipality’s capacity to deliver efficient and responsive services to the community. The newly acquired fleet includes two dump trucks for waste dumping and one excavator (plant machine), which will play a vital role in maintaining public spaces, enhancing public safety, and improving overall service delivery.
The introduction of the two trucks and the excavator is also a direct response to past disasters experienced in Ladysmith, particularly in the CBD area, where the overfilling of the Klip River Dam near Kandahar led to severe flooding during the rainy season past years. The municipality has, therefore, prioritized the acquisition of this equipment to mitigate future risks and prevent similar disasters.
The two trucks and an excavator, with an estimated cost of approximately R8 million, will be instrumental in managing stormwater challenges, clearing debris, and supporting disaster management interventions. Mayor Sibisi expressed hope that this investment will help save lives and protect infrastructure, as recurring overfilling of the dam has posed ongoing risks to the town.
In closing, the Mayor reaffirmed his commitment to service delivery and wished the residents of Ladysmith a safe and happy festive season. He further urged motorists to comply with road traffic rules to prevent accidents during the holiday period.
