The Honourable Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Hon. VF Hlabisa, today visited the Ekuvukeni community to officially hand over the completed Ekuvukeni Water Supply Project. The event marked a significant milestone in addressing water scarcity and improving the quality of life for residents.
The handover ceremony was attended by a diverse group of stakeholders, including the Alfred Duma Local Municipality Mayor Cllr ZJ Sibisi, uThukela District Municipality Mayor, Inkosi NB Shabalala, Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality, Cllr M Myeza, Deputy Mayors, Speakers and Councillors for the mentioned municipality’s, Traditional Leaders led by Deputy Chairperson of Amakhosi Asendlunkulu, Inkosi Mabaso, the National, KZNCOGTA, MISA and municipality’s officials, and most importantly, the residents of Ekuvukeni. The atmosphere was filled with optimism and gratitude as Minister Hlabisa addressed the gathering, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving sustainable development.
The Ekuvukeni Water Supply Project was initiated to address the pressing need for reliable access to clean water in the area. For years, residents of wards 30 to 36 have faced significant challenges due to inadequate water infrastructure. This project aimed to provide a long-term solution by upgrading existing systems and expanding the water supply network.
The Ekuvukeni Water Supply Project holds immense significance for wards 30 to 36. It ensures a consistent and reliable water supply, which is crucial for public health, sanitation, and economic activities. Access to clean water empowers residents to lead healthier and more productive lives. This project directly contributes to the improvement of the overall well-being of the community.
In his opening address, Hon Mayor, Cllr ZJ Sibisi expressed his gratitude to Minister Hlabisa and the Department of CoGTA for their unwavering support. Further emphasized the positive impact of the project on the community and reiterated the municipality’s commitment to maintaining and expanding essential services for all residents.
National Minister, Hon Hlabisa delivered a powerful speech, underscoring the importance of water access as a fundamental human right. He emphasized the need for infrastructure protection, urging community members to safeguard the newly implemented systems. The Minister also highlighted the project’s contribution to job creation and economic development within the region.
In a significant announcement, Minister Hlabisa committed R7 million to uThukela District Municipality to address persistent water and sewer blockages in the municipality. This additional funding will enable the municipality to enhance its maintenance and response capabilities, ensuring the efficient operation of water and sanitation infrastructure.
Furthermore, Minister Hlabisa acknowledged the Alfred Duma Local Municipality progress as an Intermediate City and highlighted the increased grant allocations from the national government. These additional resources will empower the municipality to further invest in infrastructure development to continue finding solutions to deal with floods season in the town and service delivery, and community upliftment programs.
In his closing remarks, Minister Hlabisa reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting local municipalities in their efforts to provide essential services. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding infrastructure and urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure the sustainable development of the region.
