The Mayor of Alfred Duma Local Municipality, Cllr ZJ.Sibisi, today, Friday, 19 June 2026, led a multi-stakeholder compliance inspection of informal trading businesses operating within uMnambithi Central Business District (CBD). The inspection was conducted alongside Deputy Mayor Cllr S Simelane, the Chairperson of the Development Planning and Human Settlements Portfolio Committee, Cllr A. Warrassaly, Cllrs municipal officials, law enforcement agencies, and other relevant stakeholders.
The initiative forms part of the Municipality’s ongoing commitment to promoting compliance with municipal by-laws, safeguarding fair trading practices, and advancing the principle of “Local Business for Local People.”
During the operation, the inspection team visited a number of informal trading establishments, including salons, tuck shops, and street vending sites, to assess compliance with applicable business regulations and licensing requirements. The exercise sought to verify that businesses operating within the municipality possess the necessary permits and documentation and are conducting their activities in accordance with municipal legislation.
Addressing traders during the inspection, Mayor Sibisi reiterated the Municipality’s commitment to creating an orderly, fair, and compliant trading environment. He emphasized that businesses found to be operating without the required permits or legal documentation would be subjected to corrective measures, including the possible removal from trading sites, to ensure that opportunities are afforded to compliant traders.
The Mayor further encouraged South Africans interested in pursuing business opportunities within the municipality to formally apply for the relevant trading permits and adhere to all regulatory requirements governing business operations.
“Ensuring compliance within the informal trading sector not only promotes fairness and accountability but also strengthens local economic development and creates sustainable opportunities for our communities,” said Mayor Sibisi.
