On Tuesday, 15 July 2025, the Mayor of Alfred Duma Local Municipality, Cllr ZJ Sibisi, visited the Mtateni Community Hall in Ward 17 under the leadership of Ward Councillor CT Mlaba. The purpose of the visit was to officially introduce the contractor appointed for the rehabilitation of the Mtateni low water crossing to the local community.
This initiative is intended to address critical community needs, particularly those affecting school children and emergency service accessibility.
In attendance were municipal officials, ward committee members, community members, and Cllr F Zuma, who welcomed all attendees. Cllr Zuma also commended the community for honouring the invitation and formally introduced the Honourable Mayor, Cllr ZJ Sibisi.
In his address, Mayor Sibisi applauded the community for electing a dedicated ward councillor who prioritises the interests of the people. He further urged residents to take pride in the new infrastructure and to ensure its protection for the benefit of future generations.
The rehabilitation of the Mtateni low water crossing is funded through a disaster grant from the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA). The Municipality appeals to community members to report any concerns or dissatisfaction regarding the project through the Ward Councillor. Should the Councillor be unavailable, residents are encouraged to contact the Office of the Mayor. The Mayor also stressed the importance of not interfering with the project, as this may cause delays in service delivery.
Mayor Sibisi also announced upcoming projects in other wards, including the introduction of a contractor for an asphalt road in Ward 20 and another for the rehabilitation of a low water crossing in Ward 30. These form part of the municipality’s broader plan to accelerate service delivery.
As part of its commitment to caring for the community, the Municipality recently donated a house to the KwaMvemve homestead and provided 50 pairs of school shoes to learners from various schools within the ward.
Siwelile Mose Projects was officially introduced as the contractor appointed to rehabilitate the Mtateni low water crossing. The project is valued at R2 million and is expected to be completed within four months. In addition, it will create ten (10) employment opportunities for local community members.
