On Friday the 10th of January 2025 Alfred Duma Local Municipality Deputy Mayor Cllr S Simelane visited eZakheni ward 8 community with the aim of the handing over a swimming pool that has been renovated by the Municipality as part of mayoral projects. He urged the community not to vandalise their infrastructure and further informed them that the project has created job opportunities for residents ie.securities and lifeguards.
In a heartfelt visit, the Mayor of Alfred Duma Local Municipality (ADLM) extended condolences to the family of a woman who tragically drowned near an incomplete bridge. The Shabalala family lost a family member who drowned at another area just near the new bridge.
His worship the Mayor of Alfred Duma Local Municipality Cllr Zama Sibisi accompanied by Honourable MC Maphisa, MPL and counncillors visited eMangweni area in ward 29 to handover a bridge that was constructed for the ward 29 residents by the municipality.
Speaking to residents, the Mayor highlighted the financial challenges that arise from project disruptions. “Delays and disturbances to the project result in funds being reallocated, making it harder to complete vital infrastructure,” the Mayor explained. Community members were urged to protect and safeguard the project to ensure the bridge’s successful completion.
The Mayor expressed gratitude to residents for their vigilance in safeguarding the existing structure, which was built at an estimated cost of over R6 million. The project, once completed, is expected to significantly improve connectivity in the area.
Member of parliament Mr Maphisa, Chairperson of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) Youth in KwaZulu-Natal, delivered the keynote address, commending the Mayor for prioritizing service delivery as promised when the IFP was voted into power.
“Our communities must benefit from opportunities available through government programs,” Maphisa said, highlighting initiatives such as business funding from the Office of the Premier and agricultural bursaries available through the Department of Agriculture. Graduates were encouraged to apply for these opportunities to further their education and contribute to the economy.
He emphasized the need for all spheres of government to work together to address community challenges effectively. “We will engage with the relevant departments to understand why the bridge remains incomplete despite appointments being made. This is a matter of urgency as lives are at stake,” he added.
Maphisa also reiterated the IFP’s commitment to fighting gender-based violence (GBV), drugs, and kidnapping, urging the community to uphold the spirit of Ubuntu. “The late iNkosi Mangosuthu Buthelezi left us with a legacy to protect women and children, and we will honor that instruction,” he said.
The Mayor further announced that bursaries are available through ADLM to assist students with registration fees, ensuring access to education for young people in the municipality.
