The Alfred Duma Local Municipality wishes to inform residents of the compounding of water currently affecting Lyell Street in Ladysmith.
The compounding of water between Queen and King Streets is a result of heavy rainfall combined with limited stormwater drainage capacity in the area. The limited capacity is due to the ongoing rehabilitation of the N11 and the relocation and upgrading of the stormwater network within Lyell Street by SANRAL.
It should be noted that the Klip River is flowing at 5 meters and has not contributed to the current situation in Lyell Street. The compounded water in Lyell Street has begun to drain.
Municipal employees have assessed the situation and will continue to closely monitor water levels. Traffic control measures have been implemented, and motorists are advised to avoid the area until conditions improve.
The flooding on Lyell Street is isolated and does not indicate widespread flooding elsewhere in the town. The municipality continues to monitor weather conditions and will provide updates should the situation change.
Residents are encouraged to report emergencies through the official municipal contact number 036 631 1777.
Due to the heavy storm currently affecting the area, the municipality is also experiencing power outages in various parts of Ladysmith and surrounding areas. These outages are caused by several factors, including trees falling onto overhead power lines, resulting in power trips, as well as overhead lines coming into contact with each other.
The municipality has received a high number of calls from customers reporting power outages and assures the public that teams are attending to all reported faults, whether individual supply issues or general overhead line trips.
However, due to limited resources and reduced staff availability during this period, restoration progress will be slower than usual. In some areas, especially where trees have fallen onto overhead lines, restoration will be challenging. Without adequate resources to clear fallen trees, power restoration in those locations will not be possible immediately.
The Alfred Duma Local Municipality appreciates the patience and understanding of residents as efforts continue to restore power safely and as quickly as possible.
