On Friday, 1 December 2023, the Alfred Duma Local Municipality led by His Worship the Mayor, Cllr Zama Sibisi successfully held its first ever Christmas Carols in front of Ladysmith Town Hall.

The event began with candle lighting ceremony and a parade that started at the front of the Murchison Mall leading to the Town Hall. The parade was led by the Deputy Mayor Cllr Sizwe Simelane as well as the Speaker, Cllr Bhekinkosi Sithole and Exco Member, Cllr Abbas Warassally. Also, part of the parade were municipal officials and members of the community. During the parade various Christmas carols were sung as the joy of the Festive Season created and ambience of Christmas that is fast approaching.

The children who were part of the event received gifts from Santa Clause and the municipal leadership, and with much excitement had a photoshoot opportunity with Santa and their family members. Local musician Mxolisi Magubane also graced the event with his melodies and sang cheerful Christmas songs.

The Deputy Mayor, Cllr Simelane in his address, wished all the citizens everything of the best for the Festive Season and reminded them to take care of themselves. Cllr Simelane also took time to speak on matters of HIV/Aids since the 1st of December is World Aids Day. He reminded those present of the importance of staying safe all times and ensuring that there is a reduction in the infection rate of this incurable disease. A moment of remembrance for those who lost their lives due to AIDs was also observed.

Cllr Warassally who delivered a speech on behalf of the mayor who was committed elsewhere, outlined and emphasised on the following;

  • The importance of road safety and using the road wisely during the Festive Season, and ensuring that people try to obey the rules of the road all times.
  • Progress on service delivery
  • The importance registering to vote for the upcoming 2024 General elections.

He further encouraged each and every member of community to carry the spirit of ubuntu by embodying the spirit of generosity which defines the essence of Christmas. “Let’s extend our goodwill by reaching out to those who are in need with a generous a helping hand, kind words, a warm embrace and a warm meal,” he concluded
