On Friday, 25 July 2025, Alfred Duma Local Municipality, led by Mayor Cllr ZJ Sibisi, through the Department of Development Planning and Human Settlements in collaboration with the Local Economic Development (LED) Section, successfully hosted a Business License and Tuckshop Registration Compliance Workshop at uMnambithi Town Hall.

This impactful initiative was conducted in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA); Small Enterprise Development Finance Agency (SEFA); Trade and Investment KwaZulu-Natal; Small Business Uthukela; KwaZulu-Natal Economic Regulatory Authority (KZNERA); FNB; and Ithala Development Finance Corporation Limited; . The aim of this workshop was to assist both formal and informal businesses in understanding and complying with business legislation. The session also emphasized the importance of regulatory compliance and the benefits businesses can derive from adhering to legal standards.

In his remarks, Cllr A. Warrasally, Chairperson of the LED Portfolio Committee, welcomed guests and underscored the significant role entrepreneurs in Ladysmith play in stimulating the local economy through job creation and tax contributions. He further urged businesses to refrain from employing undocumented foreign nationals who are not legally permitted to work in South Africa, as this undermines the integrity of local businesses and deprives the country of much-needed tax revenue.

The session also served to raise awareness about key requirements for operating businesses and tuckshops, including food safety, consumer protection laws, and other regulatory obligations.
