The Alfred Duma Local Municipality, under the leadership of Mayor, Cllr Z.J. Sibisi, has noted with serious concern reports of tuckshops being set alight in residential areas.
This follows incidents reported in the Ezakheni KwaMthanti area at the Crossing Rank, as well as cases where containers near the railway bridge were allegedly set on fire. In Ezakheni Sections C2 and A, there were also reported attempts to loot businesses, although these attempts were unsuccessful.
The Municipality strongly condemns these reckless, unlawful, and destructive acts. The burning of tuckshops and any form of looting or vandalism constitute criminal offences and will not be tolerated. Law enforcement agencies have been alerted and will deal decisively with anyone found to be involved in such activities.
The Municipality wishes to make it unequivocally clear that individuals who participate in these acts may face the full consequences of the law. Residents are urged to refrain from any form of vandalism, destruction of property, or criminal behaviour.
We further call upon all members of the community to remain calm, exercise restraint, and avoid taking the law into their own hands. The Municipality urges residents to work together to maintain peace, stability, and respect for the rule of law.
Residents are encouraged to report any incidents of vandalism, looting, arson, or suspicious activities to the Municipality’s 24-hour emergency line on 036 637 2231. Community cooperation is critical in assisting law enforcement authorities to prevent further criminal acts and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
At the same time, the Municipality encourages residents who wish to engage in business activities to formally register their businesses or tuckshops and ensure that they are included in the Municipal database. This will enable them to access potential support programmes and future economic development opportunities offered by the Municipality and its partners.
