The Alfred Duma Local Municipality Mayor, His Worship Cllr Zama Sibisi accompanied by members of the Council, Deputy Mayor Cllr S Simelane, MPAC Chairperson Cllr M Suddaby, Exco Member, Cllr A Warrasally, Cllr M Sithole, Cllr Thabethe, Cllr Shabalala, Cllr Mlaba, Cllr Zikalala, Cllr Kubheka, Cllr Zwane, Cllr Ntsuntsha and Cllr Majola officially launched the Festive Season Road Safety Awareness Campaign aimed at curbing the high rates roads accidents at the N 11 next to the Anti-Anima Cruelty League, on the 24th of November2023.
A campaign initiated by the Department of Public Safety & Traffic Emergency led by Director, Mr Patric Simelane, that was conducted in collaboration with the South African Police Services (SAPS), Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and municipal Law Enforcement which was held in one of the spot that is known for it high status of car accidents.
The campaign started with a briefing at Council Chamber where His Worship the Mayor applauded the Public Safety Department and SAPS for working tirelessly in assuring that the road users are using the roads responsibly. They are available at all times, even in high-risk areas and conditions, by using safety measures and making sure that those who are against the law face the consequences.
Cllr S Simelane, the Deputy Mayor commended the initiative of the Public Safety and SAPS in creating awareness during the festive season where crime is very high.
SAPS Brigadier Kunene expressed her gratitude for the healthy working relationship between them, the municipality and SAPS.
Department of Public Safety and Traffic Emergency Executive Director, Mr Patrick Simelane outlined a plan the municipality has to minimize road accidents by creating an awareness campaign. This year, awareness was held under the theme “PROTECT YOUR LIFE AND MINE, DRIVE CAREFULLY” this festive season.
We have allocated 6 part-time nurses that will be drawing blood on suspected drunk drivers. Our officers will be working 24/7 during this Festive Season.
The Municipality has purchased a sophisticated Number Plate Recognition System that has been installed in one of its High Performance Vehicles. The system detects the following:
1. Outstanding traffic fines
2. Reported stolen vehicles
3. Unlicensed vehicles.
So far, the system has detected 800 unpaid arrest warrants. Our mission is to try and reduce road fatalities by at least 10% during this festive season. The Road Safety Festive Season Plan consists of these phases: Road Safety Awareness which started in November, the second phase is the Maximized Law Enforcement starting in December, followed by the Holiday Cleanup in January.
