As part of the continued commemoration of Literacy Month, the Alfred Duma Local Municipality hosted the “Reading for Meaning” Competition at the Ladysmith Civic Hall on Thursday, 17 September 2026. The competition forms part of the municipality’s literacy programmes aimed at promoting a culture of reading and providing learners with a platform to showcase and enhance their reading skills, vocabulary and language proficiency.
A total of 71 Grade 4 learners participated in the event, which was attended by parents, teachers, learners from various schools, municipal officials, and representatives from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
The competition was conducted in both IsiZulu and English, with 36 learners competing in IsiZulu and 35 learners competing in English. It brought together learners from various primary schools within the municipality, creating opportunities for learning, inspiration, and healthy competition, while also building confidence and public speaking skills.
The Alfred Duma Local Municipality believes that investing in literacy is investing in the future of our children and community. Through programmes such as the “Reading for Meaning” Competition, the municipality hopes to nurture learners who are articulate, confident and academically empowered.
