On the 22nd of May 2024, the Alfred Duma Local Municipality: Ladysmith Public Library, in partnership with the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture (DSAC), proudly hosted the Level One Reading Competition. This exciting event targeted Grade 4 learners, aiming to foster a lifelong love for reading at a young age. The participating schools included Keate Street Primary, Andante Primary, and Umkhamba Primary School.
The competition assessed learners on various reading skills, including fluency, pronunciation, comprehension, and spelling. These fundamental skills are crucial for ensuring that children, by the age of 10, can read with understanding. The Library believes that early mastery of these skills is essential for academic success and personal development.

The Municipality is thrilled to announce the winners who will represent the Ladysmith Public Library in the second level of the competition. For IsiZulu, the winners are Dube Sandisiwe, Dlamini Kwamukelwe and Ndlovu Bandile, and for English, the winners are Lunga Luyanda, Sublal Svasti and Ndlovu Asemahle. These talented young readers demonstrated exceptional skills and will move on to compete at a Municipality-based level.

By engaging young learners in such a comprehensive reading program, the Alfred Duma Local Municipality and its partners are investing in the future of these children, encouraging them to develop strong reading habits that will benefit them throughout their lives. The event was not only a test of abilities but also a celebration of the joy and importance of reading.
