The Alfred Duma Local Municipality is reeling with shock and sadness following the brutal rape of a 14-year-old girl in Colenso, uMnambithi. Mayor Cllr Z.J. Sibisi has condemned this senseless act of violence towards young girls and women at large.

The incident occurred between the 1st and 2nd of January 2026 in the area called Top Rank.

The suspect appeared in Ladysmith Magistrate Court today, the 5th January 2026. The case has been postponed to the 7th of January 2026 at the Colenso Magistrate Court.

Mayor Cllr Z.J. Sibisi has strongly condemned this act and is calling for swift justice to be served. The municipality urges the courts to impose the maximum sentence allowable under the law to send a clear message that such crimes will not be tolerated within our community.

We stand in unity with the victim and her family during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

The municipality is against gender-based violence and supports all initiatives aimed at eradicating this scourge.

Issued by Office of the Mayor, Cllr ZJ Sibisi
