On Tuesday, 28 July 2026, the Alfred Duma Local Municipality, led by Mayor Cllr ZJ Sibisi through the Department of Community and Social Services, in collaboration with the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), conducted a Clean-Up and Educational Awareness Campaign in Steadville, Ward 10, under the leadership of Cllr X Mngadi.
The aim of the campaign was to promote and educate the community on waste management, refuse collection, illegal dumping, and environmental responsibility. Cleaning was conducted around Steadville areas by the ward councillor, municipal officials, St John’s Anglican Church members, and EDTEA representatives.
Cllr Mngadi extended his gratitude to the Alfred Duma Local Municipality and the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs for partnering with Ward 10 community in a clean-up and educational awareness campaign. “We cannot build the community we want if we continue to live in dirt and disorder. This campaign is not just about picking up litter; it is about restoring dignity, protecting the health of our children, and taking pride in our surroundings.”
Officials highlighted that under Section 24 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, “everyone has the right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being.” To give effect to this constitutional right, the National Environmental Management Act places a legal responsibility on all citizens. This includes the principle of “Duty of Care” which states that “Everyone has a duty to manage any waste generated by their activities or by the activities of those working under their direction, in such a manner that the waste does not cause harm to human health or damage to the environment.”
The Municipality reiterates its commitment to keeping Alfred Duma clean, safe, and healthy, and calls on all residents to take ownership of their environment and to dispose of waste responsibly.
