The Alfred Duma Local Municipality, under the leadership of Mayor Cllr ZJ Sibisi, through the Community and Social Services-Library Unit successfully hosted a Children’s Day Celebration as part of Children’s Month and Disability Rights Awareness Month. The theme was ‘Promoting the accessibility of our libraries to children and persons living with disabilities.’

The programme highlighted the library’s commitment to inclusive, equitable, and accessible learning environments. The event brought together children, young people, parents, caregivers, and community members to engage with library services supporting individuals with disabilities.

Activities showcased resources, reading programmes, and inclusive services, demonstrating that public libraries are safe, welcoming spaces for all abilities.

The importance of changing misconceptions about library access for persons with disabilities was made; Often children, young people and people living with disabilities seldom visit our libraries to access the differing services offered by our libraries simply because they believe that libraries do not cater for people living with disabilities which is a myth that this programme plans to dispel.

The programme included interactive reading sessions, accessible learning materials, and opportunities for children with varying abilities to participate fully.

The Alfred Duma Local Municipality remains committed to promoting literacy, inclusivity, and equal access to information for all, especially children living with disabilities.
