Alfred Duma Local Municipality, Operation Sukuma Sakhe Department, and Sizabantu Disability Host Roosboom Disability Day Program in Collaboration with Key Stakeholders
The Alfred Duma Local Municipality, in collaboration with Operation Sukuma Sakhe and Sizabantu Disability, hosted the Roosboom Disability Day Program to address challenges faced by persons with disabilities.
The event took place on Thursday, 12 December 2024. Ms. Z. Hlatshwayo, representing the Alfred Duma Local Municipality Library, delivered a message of support, emphasizing the municipality’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and accessibility for all residents. She also showcased devices such as a mini-library device for the visually impaired.
Department of Education, Special Needs Sector: Mrs. B.B. Tau
Mrs. Tau encouraged parents to assess and support their children with disabilities without judgment. She emphasized the importance of registering children with special needs in appropriate schools rather than mainstream schools that may not address their unique needs.
Social Development: Mr. S. Shabalala
Mr. Shabalala urged persons with disabilities not to feel ashamed of their circumstances, stressing that they have equal rights. He highlighted that the Department of Social Development is available to cater to their social needs, including providing funding and support for forming Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs). He also emphasized the department’s role in offering training and support for those experiencing emotional abuse.
SBR: Mr. S. Majozi
Mr. Majozi encouraged individuals facing challenges with assistive devices to visit his sector at the Ladysmith Provincial Hospital. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that persons with disabilities receive the necessary support to empower them to reach their full potential.
OSS: Mr. S. Gumede, Alfred Duma Municipality
Mr. Gumede highlighted the municipality’s efforts in supporting ward disability forums and organizing disability campaigns. These initiatives aim to address the needs of persons with disabilities and enhance their employability in government sectors.
Inkanyezi Special School Former Student: Mr. M. Langa
Mr. Langa, a former student of Inkanyezi Special School, shared his success story. He encouraged children with disabilities to pursue education and make use of available resources. As a business owner supported by the NYDA, he demonstrated that disabilities do not hinder success.
SAPS: Mr. S. Dubazane
Mr. Dubazane cautioned against seeking assistance from strangers and highlighted the increase in stokvel-related robberies during the festive season. He advised members to transfer funds directly into individual accounts instead of keeping cash at home.
NYDA: Ms. N. Mkhonza
Ms. Mkhonza informed attendees about programs offered by the NYDA, including funding opportunities for NGOs.
HIV and TB Care
The youth were encouraged to avoid unsafe sexual practices and to utilize available health facilities to protect themselves and others.
